Rebranding

Taking on a huge rebranding project is a tad daunting - especially when you are rebranding your own company. We started Dynamic Vantage back in 2003 when we were living in Boston. The company was really just an umbrella company for our photoblogging service, Expressions. We didn’t have plans to start a design agency. A year or so ago though, we took the plunge into the design arena and things have been going very well. We are just starting to move the company over to the UK, since this is where we are now, and as part of the move we’ve decided to rebrand.

Although, at first we thought we’d keep the name Dynamic Vantage, we’ve now decided to rename ourselves as well. A fresh start. “Dynamic Vantage” just doesn’t fit who we are any more. It’s too long. It’s too formal. We want something less serious and more fitting to our small team. Coming up with a new name is a challenge though, as any one who has ever started a company or launched a product can relate to. This article on Think Vitamin, “How to Name Your Company” was a very good read and I’d recommend it. The comments are worth the time as well. I don’t agree with everything in the article though, but it does touch on some good points and a good process for getting ideas flowing. Specifically, we want to take these suggestions and keep them in mind for our new name:

  • It’s easy to remember
  • It’s easy to spell
  • It’s short (1-3 syllables)
  • It says something about our personality

So, what process have you used when naming your company, service or product? What tips do you have?

Trying to come up with company or product names a nighmare, you come up with something you like then do a quick search on google and someone already uses it or owns the domain. A while ago I had to come up with names for of all things a fire extinguisher. I started writing down ideas, asked friends used a theasaurs, www.rhymezone.com is a useful resource. In the end my boyfriend and I came up with the idea they chose after a few glasses of wine. It really helped!

Hi Tara,

Yeah, I’m finding that to be the case far too often. I’ve come up with a few things I really like, but then the domain is taken. There is a lot of debate whether you need the .com exactly as the name or not. 37Signals gets away with basecamphq.com, rather than basecamp, and backpackit, rather than backpack, but they are also a company that has a lot of attention, with a large following. For us, we need to make sure we can get the domain - so yeah, it’s a challenge coming up with something original, fitting, and available.

Wine huh? Hmm. I think I’ll give that a shot;) Thanks!
