Sad…

It is a sad, sad day for me as a South African. Zuma has now been elected as president of the ANC, which means he will be the SA president in 2009. The ANC holds the vast majority of votes each election and it’s no mystery that they will continue to govern South Africa. It’s just a sad state of affairs to think that Zuma will one day be our president. This is a man who:

  • Was charged with rape by a family friend. (The charges were dismissed in court).
  • Admitted to having unprotected sex (although he denied rape) with a woman who he knew was HIV postive.
  • Claimed that he wasn’t worried about contracting Aids because he “took a shower” afterwards. Yes, showering prevents HIV according to him.
  • Was charged with corruption and fraud, but the case was put on hold. He was dismissed as the deputy president in 2005 due to these charges. Further charges are still being investigated and it is thought he will be formally charged in the new year.
  • Has openly, and blatantly, expressed his “distaste” for homosexuality stating that if a homosexual were to stand in front of him, he would “knock him down”.
  • His little personal anthem is Lethu Mshini Wami with lyrics that translate literally to “bring me my machine” but is understood to refer to a machine gun. This was a song sung during the apartheid era.

Yeah, sounds like the kind of guy you want as president right?

I am currently living in SA, in the process of immigrating as a result of the current governments nonsense. The saddest part for out of the whole SA debacle is this, South Africa has so much to offer, but its riches are being squandered and will land in the hands of a man like Zuma. Secondly, we have had such a very soft stance on our neigbours government under the despotic rule of Robert Mugabe. It would seem that the ANC approves in some way of his behaviour, if that is so, then SA will slide down the sewer with the rest of Africa. As a South African, I am devastated to leave, but realise I have to go!
