naughty, naughty

I’m not sure I’ll ever understand how folks can steal other people’s designs and then have the audacity to claim ownership - especially when they also claim to be a web designer themselves. If you are a designer, shouldn’t you design your own portfolio site? Granted I used a template designed by someone else (a designer I rather admire) on this blog for some time, but this is a personal site and I never for a minute claimed it was my own design. There’s a big difference.

Not DV

A blatant rip

This “designer” not only blatantly copied the Dynamic Vantage (the original of course) site design, but she copied text word for word to promote herself and even kept our Google Analytics code in the source (that was how I came across the site in the first place). Yes, admittedly, it can be flattering and reinforces the fact that you have a good looking site - which is one good thing to take away from this - but it’s also incredibly annoying since it is your own hard work. Most importantly though, I’d hate anyone to come across her site first and think that we copied her design. Far from the truth! It’s such a pity that folks do this.

I’m bemused by the copyright notice as well, “Please don’t steal. That’s naughty.“. Yes, yes it is. Naughty indeed.

Update: The site has been removed, although some of our files are still there. We never heard back from her, but I’m guessing the email from her host prompted some action. And, it seems the thievery spreads.

I’ve had this happen to me - not kidding - 38 times! The biggest was one girl who basically stole an entire site (years of journal entries) but replaced british or danish words with spanish ones and it was just so bad. I’ve had people steal photos of me and say it’s them and that’s the weirdest!

Almost always the thieves leave identifying remarks that they forget to remove - like the copyright with my name, my flickr code, and the google code, too. I’ve actually never discovered a thief - they’ve always been pointed out to me by readers who have found them. And I’ve only had to take legal action twice. But still, it’s frustrating and lame ass I think.

And about a third of them were always “designers!”

have you contacted her web host? A search of her domain should tell you where the domain is pointed… That is just so….wrong. It’s enough to violate most rights of service for webhosts. I’m so sorry, sweetie. Update us on what happens!!!

Alex - wow! That is appalling. I’ve had some other sites stolen a few times, and photos all the time, but never to that degree or anyone trying to pass themselves off as me. That is creepy. Although, heck - with how pretty you are, I wanna look like you too;)

I have added in a new little “hidden” CSS element which will easily tell me if someone has just copied our CSS.

Deb - Nope, not yet. We’ve sent an email and I was hoping she’d reply. Nothing yet. If she still doesn’t, that will need to be my next step.

Covert CSS? Tell me more!

I did get a reply from my “guy.” He said it was “just for testing.” Um, yeah right; I’ve got this bridge in Manhattan and I can let him have it for really cheap. :)

That’s just shameless, and speaks to the lack of creativity in other people. It feels very Single White Female to me.
