Browser Version Targeting

A lot of discussions, and arguments, are going around after this recent ALA article, Beyond DOCTYPE: Web Standards, Forward Compatibility, and IE8. As it usually goes with opinions: everyone has one and no one can be absolutely right. I’m still reading through responses, ideas and suggestions, but my initial reaction was, “Oh god. Another thing to deal with because IE sucks.” Yeah, a knee-jerk reaction to be sure, but years of dealing with IE issues has left me rather jaded about IE’s ability to follow web standards. I’m now spending a little more time reading through some articles to get a better idea of the pros and cons. What are your thoughts?
