attacks in SA

Every South African with an iota of humanity condemns the recent attacks on “foreigners” within the country. I will always be proud to be South African, but I am utterly shocked and embarrassed by these recent attacks. How in the world do you set a human on fire and laugh at them as they die an agonising death? How? And why? Because they fled a tyrannical government in the pursuit of living a normal life? It’s just something I can not fathom. No doubt, the recent SA government actions with regards to housing has caused a major upset, and granted I do agree that the poor citizens of SA should be helped before illegal immigrants, but there is absolutely no justification for such violence. None.

The army has now been called in and I’m reminded of the years of State of Emergency we lived in. It’s sad to see a country with so much beauty, potential and vibrancy resort to such insane violence. Obviously these are specific cases and does not speak for the entire country - in fact the large majority condemns these actions entirely - but sadly, this is what the world will currently see of us. A violent country. Zimbabweans have enough violence to deal with. We should be embracing and helping our neighbours at this time, not turning on them. Many of these already poor and desperate people are turning to churches, humanitarian organisations and police stations for shelter and protection. If you have a few quid, or dollars, or rands, or whatever to spare, please consider donating it to these people who need food, blankets and basic supplies. The exchange rate is in your favour tremendously, so even a few bucks will be a help. £5 = R 76. The South African Red Cross is probably the best option for donations.
